William Joseph Porter was born on April 7, 1940, in Amityville, New York, to Matthew Lee and Lillian Viola Porter. A proud veteran, William served five years in the United States Army in Vietnam and was honorably discharged with several commendations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Known affectionately as "One Step" for his distinctive bowling style, William was an exceptional bowler who earned numerous awards and much recognition throughout his life. His love for the sport began as a youth working at County Line Lanes and continued after his military service as he perfected his skill across the country. He was an original member of the Amityville Allstars Little League and also developed a strong love of music, learning to play the bugle while part of the local drum and bugle corps. He and his brothers also had a singing group that once performed at the famous Apollo Theatre in New York City.
William was predeceased by his parents; sisters Beverly, Mary, Betty, and Connie; and brother Herman.
He is survived by his daughters, Terrie Porter of Houston, Texas and Tammie Johnson-Blount (Dennis) of Wake Forest, North Carolina; his brother, Henry Porter (Jearlean) of California; grandsons, Karl Kincheon and Terrance Kincheon (Brittany), of Houston, Texas; Ishan Johnson of Boston, Massachusetts; and Naymon Johnson (Victoria) of Henderson, North Carolina; his great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Gabriel and Trealyn, of Houston, Texas, and Josiah and Novah of Henderson, North Carolina. He also leaves behind a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
