William "Bill" Lee Meyer, 82, passed away on July 18, 2025. He was born in Nash County, North Carolina, on February 4, 1943, and was the son of the late Samuel Sandeford Meyer and Emma Louise Proctor.
Bill was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and loyal brother. He faithfully served his country as a United States Marine from May 1964 to May 1968. On June 19, 1971, he married Elizabeth, the love of his life, best friend, and sweetheart. Together, they shared 54 wonderful years and raised three sons, whom he loved more than himself.
A graduate of NC State University, Bill earned a master's degree in Soil Science and began a long career in public service in 1973. He retired in 2001 as the Director of the Division of Waste Management for the State of NC, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and integrity.
He was so proud of the unique bond he shared with each of his three sons, finding joy in their common experiences and values. With Lee, he shared a deep connection grounded in service and devotion, shaped by his time as a United States Marine. With Benjamin, he found a special connection through their shared love of the outdoors whether it was hunting, clearing land, or fixing the stuff you broke while doing those things. With Billy, he shared a passion for science and discovery, both pursuing careers in the field with leadership built on problem solving and common sense. Each of these relationships reflected a part of who he was, and each brought him immense pride and fulfillment.
Bill will be remembered by family and friends as a man of strength, unwavering determination, and a very generous heart. He found joy in helping others and he led by example in both his personal and professional life.
