Virginia Young "Ginger" Grimes

Virginia Young "Ginger" Grimes, age 80, of Raleigh, NC and formerly of Greenville, NC, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Duke Raleigh Hospital.

She was born in Bethel, NC on December 17, 1945, the daughter of the late Bob and Nancy Young.

Ginger was described by others as a kind, sweet and fun woman. Someone who was always so upbeat, having a magnetic personality and a big smile. She spent most of her life living in NC and also lived in TN for several years. Much of her career was working at ECU beginning in the Math Department and retiring from the School of Education. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and boasted being a 22 year survivor. Ginger married the love of her life, Wayne. Later in her life, she found so much joy in her grandchildren who fondly called her Gin-Gin. She was a devoted wife, a loving mom and grandmom and a steady friend. She will be missed by many people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 17 years, Roy Wayne Grimes. Ginger is survived by her daughter, Katharin Grimes Sauls and husband, William Ryan Sauls of Raleigh; son, Joseph Caleb Grimes of Asheville; grandchildren, Olivia Kathryn Sauls and Avery Elizabeth Sauls both of Raleigh, Nathaniel Blaze Grimes of Asheville; brothers, Robert Young and wife, Frances of Bethel, NC, Charles Young and wife, Catherine of Washington, NC; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Raleigh. The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation at the funeral home, one hour prior to the ceremony.

Flowers are welcome, or in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ginger's memory to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
