Vidalia Carlo Mercado

In Loving Memory of Vidalia Carlo Mercado

Vidalia Carlo Mercado-Beloved Mother, Sister, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, known affectionately by many as "Abuelita," "Vicky," "Yayi," and friend-passed away peacefully in Clayton, North Carolina, on April 2, 2026. She was 87 years young, a testament to the vibrant spirit, strength, resilience, and sense of humor she carried with her throughout her life.

Born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, to Rosa Emilia Mercado and Arturo Carlo, Vidalia's soul was forever rooted in the beauty of her native island. She was passionate about all things criollo-from the rhythm of Latin music and the joy of dancing to the taste of traditional food and the memory of the island's sun-drenched beaches.

A resident of Clayton, Vidalia found simple and profound pleasures in the world around her. She loved the sight of beautiful, colorful flowers, the quiet focus of her "find word" puzzles, the thrill of playing her lottery tickets, and watching her favorite shows. Her mornings were a cherished ritual: coffee and cereal, followed by a short walk down the hall to the senior center, a shopping trip, or a scenic drive. At the Clayton Senior Center, she was a spark of life, whether she was winning at Bingo, sharing a meal with friends, or singing her heart out during karaoke, shimming her shoulders as she gleefully "chair danced" to the music.

But above all else, Vidalia's heart belonged to her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her ultimate pride and joy; watching them grow was her favorite pastime, and a surprise FaceTime or phone call was all it took to brighten her day. She loved fiercely and made sure those around her felt that love through her laughter and her presence.

She is reunited now with her parents, Rosa and Arturo, and her siblings, Candida and Carmen. Her light and laughter live on in her surviving siblings, Arturo Jr., Milton, and Carol; her daughter, Catherine and son-in-law Efrain; her son, Louie and daughter-in-law Nurys; as well as her 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and the many friends who became family.

While she has left our sight, we find comfort in knowing she is now at peace and resting where the flowers never fade, the sun always shines, and the music never stops. Until we meet again, Mom. Forever in our hearts-never to be forgotten.
