With a mixture of sadness and peace, Verna Brown Worthington, 90, passed into her loving Savior's arms on September 17, 2025. She will be missed by her loving and doting husband of seventy years, Roger G. Worthington, 93.
Verna was the fifth child of Eddie Washington Brown and Hester Poston Brown. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Audrey Rogers, Mildred Carter, Hessie Bannon, and brother, Eddie Brown. Her sister, Janis Clark, currently lives in Gold River, California.
As a daughter of sharecroppers on a farm near Lake City, SC, she learned to garden, tend house, and cook. We will miss her Southern cooking and holiday feasts, especially her corn, greens, and cornbread.
She married in 1955 and after a few moves, they settled down in Garner, NC in 1963 and raised their three children. As an active member of First Baptist Church in Garner, she assured that her children knew the saving grace of Jesus. Additionally, her excellent seamstress talent kept her children clothed in the latest fashions.
Verna is survived by her children, Roger, Jr (Debra), Vera Mason, and Karen Sprinkle (Brent); her seven grandchildren Audrey Worthington, Vaughn Corsa (Paul), Miranda Worthington, Mallory Groenke (Jake), Michael Mason (Hannah), Noah Sprinkle, and Lauren Mason. She was truly blessed with four great grandchildren Luke Corsa, Dawson Jeffries, Molly Mason, and Isabelle Corsa.
Services will be held at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, NC on September 20, 2025 with visitation at 10am and a service at 11am, after which she will be laid to rest in Worthington Cemetery in Winterville, NC.
