Thomas "Tommy" Duncan
October 30, 1942 - August 26, 2026
Some people leave this world quietly, but the love they leave behind is anything but quiet.
Thomas "Tommy" Duncan, 83, of Angier, North Carolina, passed away on August 26, 2026. Born on October 30, 1942, Thomas was a lifelong resident of Angier. It was home, he loved his home, and he never needed to go far from it to find what mattered most, his family.
Tommy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Lou Duncan; his parents, Daner Love Duncan and Wallace Jay Duncan; his sister, Mary Alice Weaver; his brother, Larry Duncan; and his beloved pets, Scooter and Sadie Mae.
He leaves behind his daughters, Lori Ibarra (Jimmy) of Coats and Rhonda Alvarado (Martin) of Benson; his grandchildren, Chris Ibarra, Maria Ibarra (Jeffrey), Claudia Mozingo (A.J.), and Martin Alvarado Jr.; and his great-grandchildren, Tyler Johnson of Daphne, Alabama; Nadia Ibarra of Coats; Emma St. John of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Chris St. John of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Ryder Mozingo of Benson; and Waylon Mozingo of Benson. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Barnes of Garner, and his sweet dog, Suzie, who was a faithful companion and remained by his side.
Tommy proudly served in the National Guard, but some of his greatest acts of service happened right at home.
He was the kind of man who showed his love by showing up. If his family needed something, he was there. More often than not, you didn't even have to ask. He simply knew when someone needed a helping hand and stepped in. He was dependable, steady, and just a phone call away.
And those phone calls will be some of the hardest things to miss.
He loved NASCAR, fishing, traveling, and riding around with nowhere particular to be. He passed down his love of fishing to his family, creating memories that will be carried on long after the fishing poles have been put away.
Tommy loved his family in the simplest and most meaningful ways. He was present. He was dependable. He was the person you could call when you needed help, advice, or simply someone you knew would answer. His family never had to question whether he would show up, because he always did.
For his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was a familiar and steady part of their lives. He created memories that may have seemed ordinary at the time but will become some of the most treasured memories of all.
He gave his family a love of fishing, a love of the outdoors, and countless little pieces of himself that will continue to live on in them. Even the smallest things, like a favorite food, a familiar road, a fishing spot, a NASCAR race, or riding around on back roads can suddenly bring back the sound of his voice and the feeling of having him close.
That is the beautiful thing about someone who loved as deeply as Tommy did: he isn't really gone from the people he loved.
He lives on in his daughters.
He lives on in his grandchildren.
He lives on in his great-grandchildren.
He lives on in the stories that will be told, the lessons he taught, and the traditions he passed down.
Most of all, he lives on in the people who knew without a doubt that if they needed him, Tommy would be there.
There will be a thousand moments from here forward when his family will wish they could pick up the phone and call him. There will be things they will want to tell him, questions they will wish they could ask, and memories they will wish they could make just one more time.
But they will carry him with them.
They will keep fishing.
They will keep riding around.
They will keep telling his stories.
They will laugh at the memories, cry over the ones that hurt, and be grateful for every moment they were blessed enough to have him.
Tommy Duncan was deeply loved, and he will be deeply missed.
Until we meet again. Thank you for always being there. Thank you for never making us wonder if we could count on you. And thank you for giving us a lifetime of memories that we will carry with us forever.
