Sidney Etkin, age 94, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2026, surrounded by loving family.
Born on April 7, 1932, Sidney was raised in the Bronx and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Engineering from New York University followed by his MBA from the City College of New York. He was a proud United States veteran who served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan.
Sidney is survived by his loving wife and best friend Florence (née Kroop) of 64 years, a retired Montville High School Special Education teacher. Their proudest achievements are their three children: Lisa (partner Jeanette Peko of Tinton Falls, NJ), Alan (wife Jennifer of Raleigh, NC), and Michael (wife Rachel of Hopewell Junction, NY). They will treasure many memories of happy years beginning in Paramus, NJ and then Pine Brook, NJ where they were long-time residents and happily raised their children. Family memories include wonderful trips to the beaches of the Jersey Shore, out West to California and Hoover Dam (Nevada), as well as many other U.S. destinations. Upon retirement, they settled in Sun City, Bluffton, SC where they enjoyed many years of travel throughout Europe and Asia, lots of sun, and beautiful walks on the beach.
Sidney was predeceased by his parents, Abraham and Mollie Etkin, and his sister, Bernice Diwald. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Alexander, Dina, Grace, and Madison who always brought a smile to his face. He also leaves behind beloved nieces, nephews and friends. He was an amazing and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was always his children's greatest supporter and spent countless hours patiently throwing or catching baseballs and softballs, watching dance recitals, attending games, helping them study for exams and write essays, and anything else that he could do for them during their upbringing and beyond.
Sidney worked as an Industrial Engineer for Bendix Corporation in Teterboro, NJ and then for many years as a Controller at High Performance Tube in Union, NJ where he had a wonderful career of more than 20 years. In his retirement, you could always find Sid reading and researching articles about health or politics and sharing clippings from his research with friends and family. He also very much enjoyed writing letters to publications, playing bridge, participating in investment clubs, jogging, going for walks, and enjoying nature. Не was the world's best cookie, frozen yogurt, and Costco free sample connoisseur. Sid was also a lifelong Yankee fan.
Funeral services will take place Monday, November 9, at 10:00 a.m. at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery. The family will sit Shiva in the evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the multipurpose room at Verena at Bedford Falls (1580 Dunn Road, Raleigh, NC).
To honor Sidney, donations may be made to Transitions LifeCare Hospice (transitionslifecare.org) or Dementia Alliance International (dementiaallianceinternational.org).
