Shirly Mae Chatfield

Shirley Mae (Lee) Chatfield was born May 15, 1936, and died on November 4, 2026. She was the first of five children born to James Percy and Ila Mae (Adams) Lee. She grew up in and around Willow Spring, NC before moving to the Norfolk, VA area. She moved back to Raleigh in 1980 and remained there the rest of her life.

She is survived by four daughters: Kay Matthews, Betsy Johnson, Barbara Souter, and Shelly Sterling and her husband of 48 years, Terry Chatfield. She is also survived by three grandchildren; Rob Johnson, Dan Wright, and Stormi Souter-Brown; one brother: James Lee, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by two grandchildren: Jessie Matthews and Dylan Stojan, both her parents, and three siblings: Al Lee, Anne Stewart, and Joel Lee.

Shirley loved reading, dancing, and being out in the world. She had impeccable fashion and an appreciation for good-looking men in uniform. She seldom shied away from speaking her mind. She will be greatly missed by her surviving family.

She will be buried alongside many family members at Willow Spring Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
