Shirley Hicks passed away peacefully on September 13, 2026, surrounded by her family and supported by her amazing care team of nurses and assistants, who provided such tender and loving care during her stay at WakeMed Raleigh Campus.
Born on February 2, 1934, Shirley was the daughter of the late William Sherrill Griffin and Mavis Bullock Griffin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, William Sherrill Griffin Jr. and David Lee Griffin; her two sisters, Dorothy Lamm and Sylvia Campbell; and her beloved husband of almost 72 years, Donald Ray Hicks.
Shirley graduated from Hugh Morrison High School. Upon graduation, she began a 40-year career with the North Carolina Departments of Revenue, Transportation, and Labor, where she worked in the OSHA Division. She retired at the age of 62.
Shirley had a strong faith and began her walk with the Lord at a young age. She was a longtime member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Angier, where she faithfully attended and served. She was ready to meet her Lord and Savior and to be reunited with her husband and the love of her life, Don.
Sharing a strong sense of adventure, Shirley and Don traveled to all 50 states and to many countries around the world. Along the way, they met many people with whom they formed lasting friendships.
Shirley had the spiritual gift of hospitality. She and Don regularly welcomed friends and family into their home. Anyone who visited not only enjoyed good conversation but never went away hungry. Their door was always open, and there was always an extra place at the table.
Shirley was a humble and quiet spirit who never sought the spotlight. She was compassionate and never judgmental of others. Above all, she lived a life of contentment, love, and kindness, reflecting the way she believed the Lord desires us all to live.
She was a proud mother to her children, Donna Falkner (Mark), Denise Hicks, and Kenny Hicks (Kathy). She was blessed to spend many years with her grandchildren, Daniel Garver (Marissa Atkins), Landis Falkner, and Trent Falkner (Liz Hull); her step-granddaughter, Emily Kight (Noah) and their son, Oliver. She is also survived by her sister, Winnie Ciavarella (Angelo).
Shirley will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her gentle spirit, her generous hospitality, and the love she gave so freely to her family and friends.
In her memory, donations may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church in Willow Spring or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A service of Bryan-Lee Funeral Home - Angier.
