Shirley Joyner Abbott

Shirley Joyner Abbott, age 90, passed away Friday, May 1, 2026, in Raleigh, NC, surrounded by loving family members and holding hands with her husband of 72 years, J. Vernon Abbott. She was loved by all who knew her. Shirley accurately described herself as "nosey" and made friends everywhere she went. Every baby she encountered sought her out, sensing a kindred spirit. Shirley was an excellent cook but had a habit of telling on herself if she thought anything wasn't up to par. She and Vernon demonstrated that the key to a long happy marriage is frequent, good-natured teasing.

Shirley worked at Wachovia Bank for 26 years. After retiring in 1991, she volunteered at Rex Hospital for several years. She was an active member of Forest Hills Baptist Church for 60 years.

In addition to her husband, Shirley is survived by daughter Kim Warren (Don) of Siler City, NC, sister Vicki Gupton (Russell),  son-in-law Steve Goodman (Janice), daughter-in-law Diane Housam-Abbott, grandchildren David Goodman (Amanda), Michael Raimer-Goodman (Lauren), Justice Warren (Ayla), Kaitlyn Warren, and James Abbott and great grandchildren Lilly, Brianna, Jude, and Jules. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by daughter Judith Goodman, son Jim Abbott, granddaughter Angel Abbott, sister Deanne Overby, brother Steve Joyner, and adored dog Rommel.

A graveside service will be held at Raleigh Memorial Park at 1:00 on Wednesday, May 6, followed by a celebration of life at Forest Hills Baptist Church at 2:00.
