Shelby M. Stephenson, age 87 of Garner, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Kingswood Reserve community on Thursday, January 15, 2026. She was born September 20, 1938, in Four Oaks, North Carolina, daughter of the late John Samuel ("Sammy") and Lula (Adams) Moore. She was a graduate of Four Oaks High School, where she sang in many productions and met her husband of 61 years, Gene.
Shelby worked in the credit department at Hudson Belk, accounting department at Carolina Power & Light, in contracts and grants at N.C. State University, and in various administrative roles in North Carolina State Government, where she received the prestigious Caswell Award for 45 years of service. Additionally, Shelby worked 18 years part time, on weekends and holidays, at Wake Medical Center (now WakeMed) in Raleigh. Shelby inherited a strong work ethic from her father and finally retired completely at the age of 80 in 2019. When not at work, Shelby could usually be found in her yard gardening, shopping at Belks, or having lunch at her favorite eateries, Captain Stanley's and Bojangles, where she had many friends. Shelby also enjoyed spending time talking with neighbors and their children and was especially close to the Ousley family.
Shelby was pre-deceased by her parents, brother, Lloyd Moore, and husband, Gene Stephenson. She is survived by her son, Mike Stephenson (Mary) of Garner, North Carolina; daughter, Gina Brady (Kevin) of Henderson, Nevada; grandchildren, Sam Stephenson (Angela), Caroline Lanpher (Sean), and Robert Stephenson (fiancé' Joselyn); and great grandson, Charlie.
Visitation at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, North Carolina is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2026. Following visitation, funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. and a private burial will be held at Montlawn Memorial Park.
