Robert Rafferty

Robert T. Rafferty, age 83, of Garner, NC, formerly of Nesconset, NY, born on April 11, 1942, in Elmhurst, Queens, passed away peacefully on January 12th. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Marie Mannino Rafferty. His family takes great comfort in knowing he and Marie are reunited again.

A graduate of East Meadow High School's Class of 1960, Robert lived a life dedicated to service, family, and community.

Following high school, Robert enlisted in the US Navy, serving aboard the USS Haynesworth from 1960 to 1963. Upon returning to civilian life, he briefly worked for NY Telephone before embarking on a distinguished career in law enforcement.

In April 1965, Robert joined the Nassau County Police Department. He began as a uniform police officer in the 7th squad and became a detective in 1969. Robert's career was marked by dedication and versatility, serving in various units including the Vice Squad (1969-1976), and later in the 3rd, 1st, Sex Crimes, and 6th squad.

Robert's commitment to service extended beyond his police work. He was a co-founder of the Nassau County Emerald Society Pipe Band in February 1974 and held memberships in the DAI, PBA, and Emerald Society. He served as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus Council #3958.

After retiring from the police force in 1989, Robert continued to contribute his expertise through security consulting for O'Connell and Associates (1989-1994) and fraud investigations for World Sun Alliance (1994-2001).

An active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Smithtown, New York, Robert's faith was an important part of his life. In May 2010, he and Marie moved to Garner, North Carolina, where he enjoyed bowling, serving on the HOA board, getting together with his friends and neighbors for coffee, lunch and dinner and continuing his involvement with the Knights of Columbus.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents Matthew and Elizabeth Jean Rafferty, his younger brother Kevin Rafferty and brother in law Joseph Talenti.

Robert is survived by his children: DawnMarie Smith (Clint), Stacyanne Ringgold (Keven), and Robert M. Rafferty (Kimberly). He was a loving and proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Cooper, Kyler, Sydney, Meaghan, Brogan, Braeden, Colin, and Declan. Additionally, he is survived by his sister-in-law Phyllis Talenti, and brother-in-law Dennis (Helene) Mannino, as well as many nieces and nephews. Robert is also survived by many dear friends who were all part of his "village".

Throughout his life, Robert exemplified commitment to public service and devotion to his family and community. He will be remembered for his bravery, integrity, and the positive impact he had on all who knew him.
