Robert John Grimyser, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away in Raleigh, North Carolina, on March 1, at the age of 86.
Bob was born in Weehawken and grew up in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, the only child of Grace Grimyser Nelson and John Grimyser. He carried with him throughout his life the strong values of hard work and pride in a job well done. He was especially proud of his service in the National Guard.
Bob began his career working for his father's painting company. When his father retired, Bob purchased his tools and established Acme Painting and Decorating, building a reputation for excellence and integrity. After incorporating, he founded CAT Wallcovering, continuing to serve clients ranging from large hospitals and high-end retail establishments to modest family homes. Bob loved to work and took immense pride in every project he completed. In fact, he was still working into his 80s - a testament to his dedication, drive and vitality.
Bob was first married to Diane Rifenburg for nine years. He is survived by his oldest daughter, Tracey Severns and her husband Scott; his son, Chris Grimyser and his wife Meloriza.
In 1971, Bob married the love of his life, Diane Foresta Dara, and they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. He is survived by his stepchildren, Lisa Dara and Richard Dara and his wife, Sara Dara. Their daughter, Dana Bullock and her husband Heath, also survive him. In their later years, they were devoted "parents" to their maltipoo, Jackson.
Bob was a proud grandfather and great grandfather to Robert and Jessica Severns; Mark Grimyser; Jacob Dara; Reagan and Jenna Bullock; Cooper Grimyser; and was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Grimyser.
Bob faithfully dedicated his time to serving and volunteering at North Haven Church. Throughout his life, when he wasn't working or serving, he was truly alive at play. He loved boating, motorcycling, camping, snow skiing, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, dancing, and cruises. He was a master on the grill, known for serving the perfect steak, and could identify the make and model of any car built in the 1950s and 1960s with his eyes closed.
With his sparkling blue eyes, warm smile, affable nature, and ready laugh, Bob drew people to him everywhere he went. He was the unofficial mayor of every campground, marina, neighborhood, and gathering he entered. People simply loved being around him.
A service celebrating Bob's life will be held at North Haven Church (6620 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh) at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 7. A reception will follow at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his memory.
Bob's legacy of hard work, faith, adventure, and joy will live on in the many lives he touched.
