Peggy Joyce Griffin

Peggy Whethington Griffin, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and woman of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026. A steadfast believer in God, family, and friends, in that order, Peggy lived a life marked by humility, service, and deep love.

Peggy was born May 1, 1939, to Clifton and Laura Perry Whethington. Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Peggy graduated from Durham High School in 1957. It was there she met the love of her life, Richard. From the moment Richard laid eyes on her that spring, he told his friends, "I'm going to marry that girl"... Peggy was not as confident and she played hard to get. She finally gave in and just one year later, in the spring of 1958, they were Married. Their marriage was a shining example of commitment and love, lasting through decades of shared faith, joys, challenges, and family life.

Peggy devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising her children and caring for their home, creating a foundation of love and stability for her family. Each of her children claim their Momma as their best friend. Once her youngest child was midway through grade school, Peggy began a career with North Carolina State University in the Registration and Records Department, where she served faithfully for many years. She later continued her professional journey with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, dedicating many years of service before retiring. Throughout every season of her life, Peggy balanced devotion to her family with a strong work ethic and quiet dedication to those she served.

Together, Peggy and Richard raised four children, instilling in them strong values, a deep sense of faith, and a love for one another. A faithful servant of the Lord, Peggy was actively involved in her church for over 30 years. Peggy and Richard were dedicated members of First Baptist Church of Garner, where they found community, fellowship, and purpose. Peggy served faithfully in countless roles over the years, including being a member of the Condolence Committee, Baptism Committee, teaching Elementary Sunday School, serving on the Teller Committee, Intercessory Prayer Warrior, and she and Richard spent many years serving on the Kitchen Committee - always happy to roll up their sleeves, share a meal, and serve their community with joy.

Peggy never met a stranger. She went out of her way to make others feel welcome and loved. Many have called her their surrogate mother, because that is how she cared for them. Peggy and Richard were always faithfully by each other's side, sharing that same warmth with their church family and neighbors. With her forgiving heart and abundant love, she made everyone feel like part of her family.

Peggy's life was a testament to the power of faith, commitment, and love. She was immensely proud of her family, often saying that her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her greatest accomplishment and life's sweetest blessing. She treasured each of them deeply and celebrated their lives with unwavering love and support. She will be missed beyond measure, as each of her children lovingly proclaimed their mother to be their very best friend.

She is survived daughters, Dana Jones (Jeff) and Kristie Honeycutt (Ellis); sons, Michael Griffin (Marlene) and Clif Griffin (Debbie); brother Roy Wethington; grandchildren, Brittni Prince (Logan), Cody Jones (Shilah), Jeremy Jones, Austin Honeycutt (Sara), Noah Honeycutt, Peyton Honeycutt, Elijah Honeycutt, Crystal Griffin, Brooke Korneygay (Adam), Jacob Overton (Brittany), Mandy Roop (Chris), Joshua Griffin (Ashley) and Miranda McGee (Dylan); and great-grandchildren, Rylee, Raylan, Winry, James, Brianna, Austin, Cassidy, Brannon, Deacon, and Amara (due in May).

In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Richard Griffin, her granddaughter Savanna Honeycutt, and great-granddaughter Kinedie Kornegay.
