Lynwood Grice

Lynwood Mackie Grice passed away, surrounded by his children, on Monday, August 24, 2026, in Cary, NC.

Born on April 23, 1937, in Wake Forest, NC, Lynwood was the son of Marvin Lynwood and Lottie Davis Grice. After graduating from Wake Forest High School, he attended Chowan College on a baseball scholarship, where he played second base. Lynwood immersed himself in campus life, serving as the first student government president, college choir president, business manager of the newspaper, and won the Citizenship medal. It was also there that he met the love of his life, Jo Allen. The couple continued dating after graduating from Chowan while Lynwood completed his final two years of study at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College), where he earned a B.S in Business Administration with a minor in English. Years later, Lynwood and Jo would be honored as distinguished alumni for their dedicated work in recruiting future students to Chowan.

They married shortly after graduation and settled in Cary, NC in 1963, where they raised their three children, Kim, Woody, and Robin. A devoted father, Lynwood was deeply involved in his children's milestones, serving as the Northwoods Elementary PTA president and in the Cary High School band boosters. Lynwood spent his entire career with Great American Insurance Company, starting as an insurance adjuster and working his way up to Assistant Vice President.

Lynwood's faith was a cornerstone of his life. A dedicated member of Ephesus Baptist Church for over 60 years, he lifted his voice in the choir, served as a deacon, and contributed to numerous ministries. His heart for service extended globally and locally; he traveled to Honduras on a church mission trip to build a school and worked alongside the NC Baptist Men's Group to rebuild homes for elderly individuals and hurricane survivors.

After retirement, Lynwood and Jo enjoyed traveling to many destinations, but their favorite place was their sound-front home in Morehead City, NC. There, they loved boating and sitting on the porch with family and friends. They also cherished every moment spent with their two granddaughters, Shannon and Anya.

Lynwood was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Vicki Grice Field, and his beloved wife, Jo Allen Grice. He is survived by his children, Kim Brennan (husband Jeff), Woody Grice (wife Heather), and Robin Rubish (husband John), as well as his granddaughters, Shannon and Anya.

A celebration of Lynwood's life will take place on Saturday, August 29, at Ephesus Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, with the memorial service following at 11:00 AM.
