Lloyd Novick

April 23, 1941 — August 26, 2025

Lloyd F. Novick, MD, MPH, age 84, of Cary North Carolina, died on August 26, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife, Carole, daughter, Sara Simpson, son, Ethan Novick and four grandsons: Alex, Liam, and Cameron Simpson and Cooper Novick. 

He graduated from Colgate University, NYU School of Medicine, and Yale University School of Public Health. He was an avid lifelong sailor participating in races in upstate New York, North Carolina, and Connecticut. He was committed to public health, serving as Commissioner of Health and later Secretary for Human Services of Vermont, Director of Health Services for Arizona, and Director of the Office of Public Health for New York. He was Chair of Epidemiology at the SUNY School of Public Health in Albany, and later Chair of the Department of Public Health at the Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University. He authored more than 100 scientific articles in this field and six books. He was the founding editor of the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice, the leading publication of public health practice, and continued as Editor-in-Chief for more than 30 years.

The funeral will be held graveside on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 2:15 pm at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery located at 450 N. State Street, Raleigh, NC. Guests are welcome to attend and to gather at the home of Carole Novick at 107 Lake Cliff CT, Cary, NC, following the service.
