It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lewis Wade Weatherspoon at 10:31am on September 17, 2025. He was the son of the late George W. and Mary F. Weatherspoon of Wake County. Lewis graduated from Cary Senior High School in 1966 where he played football, wrestled and ran track. He then entered N.C. State University and graduated with a Degree in Business Management.
Lewis had a long career in the electronics industry, both in purchasing and sales. Switching careers in 2001, he began doing Commercial and Workman's Compensation inspections for various insurance companies. Upon his retirement, Lewis volunteered his time to better his community. He began as town commissioner, followed by Mayor of Angier, and finally serving as a Commissioner of Harnett County. Lewis loved his community and sought to make it a better place for all who called it home. Lewis was bestowed The Lifetime Service Award for over a decade's worth of service to Harnett County and the Town of Angier by the North Carolina House of Representatives.
Over many years, Lewis was a successful baseball coach of young people from tee ball to college summer teams. Lewis was also line coach and defensive coordinator for the Raleigh Pop Warner Wildcats helping win 5 championships, the last one undefeated and unscored on. Not only did he have a great love for coaching but loved hunting, fishing and golfing.
Lewis was married to the love of his life, Peggy Pollard Smith. They married on March 27, 1982 and spent the next 43 years enjoying travels to the mountains and the beach, until politics interfered in 2013, they enjoyed spending most of their time at their camper at Page Place in Cedar Point, NC.
Lewis and Peggy share a deep love of the Lord Jesus Christ, even traveling to do mission work for the Lord. Their most memorable mission trips were to India and Montana. In addition to their mission trips, they were faithful in the Faith Sunday School class at Fuquay Varina Baptist Church and wish to thank all the members for the love and prayers during this time. You could find them at various Bible Studies at FVBC or Piney Grove Chapel Baptist. While members at PGCBC, Lewis was instrumental in organizing the Men's Ministry, an Outdoor Ministry and Men's Bible Studies. He also served on the Board for the NC Baptist Men's Outdoor Ministry.
