John Benton Spence

With sadness in our hearts and praises on our lips, we announce the passing of Johnny B. Spence, who departed this life and entered the gates of heaven on June 29, 2026 at the age of 78 after suffering with Alzheimer's Dementia.

Johnny passed away peacefully in his home on the Spence Family Farm. He was welcomed into heaven by his parents John B. Spence & Cora Smith Spence. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carol Rhodes Spence; his daughters, Jennifer Braden(Phil) and Jonna Smith(Josh); son, Dwayne Spence(Kristy); his grandchildren, Michelle Eytchison(Colin), Spencer Braden, Rylee Braden, Brook Smith, Brantley Smith, Wesley Spence; his great-grandchildren, Cole Eytchison and Jackson Johnson.

Johnny was born on February 5, 1948 & raised in Chalybeate Springs. He enjoyed his years at LaFayette School where he played basketball and baseball. He followed those years at Campbell College where he earned his bachelor degree in business administration.

Johnny was voted Most Likely to Succeed in high school and his family and friends would say he most certainly did succeed in his career and life. Johnny met the love of his life, Carol, while bagging groceries at the A&P in Fuquay in 1967. He began his career at the NC Dept of Revenue in 1970 and retired in 2000. He made many lifetime friends during his time at the A&P and the Revenue.

Johnny lived a life devoted to the Lord and was heavily involved in his home church of Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church. There he served many years as deacon and was chairman of the brotherhood. He also served as a Sunday School teacher for 40 plus years, most of which was with the T.E.L. class. Johnny found joy in being a servant to his community, by ministering to the widows, the elderly, and through membership of the Gideons International, where he passed out hundreds of New Testaments at college campuses witnessing to college students. He exemplified a life of servitude for the cause of Christ to his family and friends.

The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for visitation at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 300 E. McIver Street, Angier, NC. The funeral will take place the next day, July 2, 2026, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home at 11:00 am with a graveside service following at Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church, 238 Chalybeate Rd, Fuquay-Varina, NC.
