John Dee Mangum, Jr.

John Dee Mangum, Jr., age 82, of Angier, NC, died on Monday, August 17, 2026, in WakeMed-Raleigh. He was born on May 6, 1944, in Harnett County, NC, to the late John Dee Mangum, Sr. and Gertha Adams Mangum.

He is survived by his children, Gina Mangum Garner, Kristie Dee Sheets and her husband, Glenn, Travis Hardman and his wife, Amber and Tracy Hardman; his sister, Donna Mangum Cobb and her husband, Earl; his grandchildren; Trevor Bryant and his wife, Sara, MacKenzie Garner, Maegan Hicks and her husband, Caleb, Travis Hardman and his wife, Martina, McKenzie Turner and her husband, Brian, Johnny Hardman, Wesley Hardman and Mallory Mehrabi; eight great-grandchildren; four nieces and two nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Smith Mangum; his sisters, Ruth Mangum Hockaday and Sharion Mangum Dugger.

Johnny was a hardworking and dedicated man who took great pride in providing for his family and serving his community. Throughout his life, he worked in many trades, including farming, building furniture, sheetrock work, and electrical work, always willing to put his skills and strong work ethic to use. Johnny proudly served as a federal firefighter at Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg for more than 25 years, dedicating his career to protecting and helping others. His commitment to service continued through his years as a volunteer firefighter with the Angier-Black River Fire Department. Johnny will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his willingness to help others, and the many ways he used his talents to make a difference in the lives of those around him.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:00 am to 10:45 in Angier Baptist Church.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 11:00 am in Angier Baptist Church with burial to follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
