John Michael “Mickey” Caviness, 85, passed away peacefully in his Garner home on September 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on June 4, 1940, and was the beloved son of the late Robert L. Caviness Sr. “Bob” and Mary L. Simmons.
A devoted family man, Mickey was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be remembered fondly by family and friends as a man who was passionate about the outdoors, whether he was in a tree stand hunting, fishing, riding a motorcycle with friends, designing jewelry and showcasing it at art festivals around Raleigh or building the contemporary designs of his late father, Bob Caviness, the founder of Caviness & Sons.
Mickey loved traveling with his wife Diane in his RV, spending time in Montana, riding his electric bike through Key West and the ever-so-competitive cornhole tournaments at Boyd’s Campground. Mickey was a true renaissance man who lived life to the fullest and he was a gift to everyone who knew him.
Mickey is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Diane Hearne Caviness; son, Chris Caviness; daughter, Catherine Caviness Roberts; his 5 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mickey is preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Caviness, Jr. "Bobby", and by his step-son, Timothy Kirkpatrick.
