John Reid Aman, age 89, of Garner, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Monday, December 22, 2025 in his home surrounded by family. He was born on September 25, 1936, in Sampson County, to the late Johnie and Pearl Aman.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, John made sure all his family was taken care of and loved. He was a member of Garner United Methodist Church and the James Auman Sunday School class. He was a graduate of Halls High School and received his sociology bachelor's degree from Duke University. He later received a master's degree in public administration from North Carolina State University.
He was a retired Deputy Chief Probation Officer in the US Federal Probation and Parole Office in Raleigh. He then served in a director-level position at the North Carolina DMV. He also served as a Sergeant at Arms in the NC General Assembly. During his retirement, he devoted much of his time to researching his family's history, visiting libraries and gravesites, distant relatives, and genealogy gatherings to piece together the family ancestry. He enjoyed woodworking and music and spent time volunteering at the Garner Performing Arts Center, building sets for several productions. Prior to moving to Garner, he was a volunteer fireman in Stedman, North Carolina. He served on the US Probation Officers Association in a leadership role and was in the National Guard for 8 years.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dora Aman of Garner, NC; son, Scott Aman and wife, Tammy of Greenville, SC; and daughter, Karen Aman and husband, Dave Edwards of Charlotte, NC; sister, Judy Jackson, and husband, Glenn; four grandsons, Nate and Reece Aman, and Matthew and Joshua Edwards; bonus daughter, Nancy Teachey, and husband, Wilson and their children, Will and Macmillan Teachey, and Mary Grace Hurley, and husband Gray. In addition to his parents, John is pre-deceased by his sister, Iris Aman Lucas, and brother, George Tony Aman. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held Saturday, December 27 at 2:00 pm, immediately followed at 3:00 pm by a Celebration of Life service, both at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner, NC.
The burial service will be held on Saturday, January 10, at 1:00 pm, at the Clinton Cemetery in Clinton, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hayes Barton Baptist Church TV Ministry.
