James Arthur Searl

James Arthur Searl, born on March 14, 1936, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, July 13, 2026. His love for music began at Eastman School of Music. This is where he met his future wife, Anne Flounders. They were married for 66 years and had two children, Laura and Lance.

James continued his music career at Bethany College and then at East Carolina University as a professor of music theory and history. He was an especially effective recruiter of the talented young trumpet players for ECU and served many years as member and chair of the Scholarship and Recruitment Committee. He performed trumpet alongside Anne on the flute in various orchestras and concert bands throughout his career.

James retired in 1998 and moved to Morehead City for 22 years. He and Anne then moved to Windsor Point Retirement Community for his final years.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Flounders Searl; daughter, Laura Searl Brandle (husband Eddie) of Angier; grandson, Davis Brandle of Angier; great-granddaughter Londyn Williams of Lillington.

Preceded in death are his mother, Margaret Pratt Harbeck; brother, William Harbeck; son, Lance Searl; granddaughter Lindsay Brandle.
