James McVey

June 1, 1962 — April 12, 2025

James Lacy McVey Sr., of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on April 12, 2025, at the age of 62. Born on June 1, 1962, in Artie, West Virginia, Jim was the beloved son of Bobby and Cali Jean Elkins McVey. He was the grandson of Walter and Nina Elkins, whose values helped shape the man he would become.

Jim graduated from Clearfork High School in 1980 and went on to attend Concord College before answering the call to serve his country. He proudly served in the United States military for four years, gaining a strong sense of purpose and discipline.

Throughout his life, Jim worked in several fields, including as Road and Grounds Foreman at Walter Reed Medical Center. In 2009, he founded Stormwater Management Corporation, building a business through determination and a strong work ethic.

Outside of work, Jim found joy in the outdoors. He especially loved fishing-a pastime that gave him a sense of calm and connection to nature. Whether it was a quiet morning by the water or an afternoon in the woods, he found peace in the simplicity of the natural world. He was also a devoted fan of Mountaineer sports, cheering on both West Virginia University and Appalachian State with pride.

Jim is survived by his live in partner Kim Runion and his children: James Lacy McVey Jr., with Donna Toney (Warren) of Artie, WV, and grandson Charles Andrew McVey; Wesley (Jenny) McVey of Morgantown, WV, and their five children-Riley, Dean, Lilly, Thorin, and Addilyn; Sean (Nicole) McVey, also of Morgantown, and their children Declan and Saoirse-both sons with his wife Cindy McVey; and daughter Lacy McVey of Raleigh, North Carolina, from his marriage to Joanne Stephenson(Steve). Though many of these relationships became distant over time, Jim carried love and hope for his children always.

He will be remembered for his independent spirit and his love for the outdoors. Those who knew him will carry his memory in the stories he told, the moments he shared, and the values he lived by.

A celebration of life will be held on June 14, 2025, at 2 pm. Located at the Pentecostal Freedom church on the Clear Fork High School site. All Details will be shared with friends and family once arrangements are finalized. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, in honor of Jim's memory.
