James Hill

March 24, 1934 — August 18, 2025

James (Jim) Allen Hill, Jr. of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Charlotte, NC on March 24, 1934 to James Allen Hill, Sr. and Mary Daphne Hill (née Raper), and grew up in Wilson, NC. He was married in 1964 to Harriet Eloise Tomlinson of Florence, AL, and they had three sons together: James Allen Hill III, currently of Tallahassee, FL; Charles Martin Hill, of Raleigh; and Robert Tomlinson Hill, who died in 1990.

Jim attended college at UNC-CH where he was a proud member of the ROTC and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He graduated in 1956 with a degree in Business Administration and thereafter had a successful career as a CPA, first with R. L. Steele & Company in Raleigh, then with Price Waterhouse in Atlanta, before beginning his own partnership in Raleigh with his father, which later became Hill, Maddison & Boyce. Jim also served in the Army and Air Force Reserves for many years.

Jim was highly involved in the community, serving as President and Chairman of the Board of the NC American Cancer Society; Chairman of the Wake County Mental Health Board; President of the NC Society of the Cincinnati; Treasurer of the Board of Wolf Laurel Country Club, and a Vestry member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. An avid history buff, he was an active member of the Military Order of the Stars and Bars, the Mayflower Society, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Jamestown Descendents, and the St. Andrew's Society.

Jim was known for being a highly approachable, warm "people person." He could start up a conversation with anyone and was always ready with a joke. He is also remembered for his wide-ranging and unique interests, his professional integrity, his generosity, and especially for his dedicated love for his family and friends.

In addition to his wife and two eldest sons, Jim is survived by his daughters-in-law, Rachel Hill and Caroline Cheek-Hill; his five grandchildren, Jackson Cheek, James Hill, Preston Cheek, John Hill and Campbell Hill; and his sister, Betty Clyde (Bootsie) Bissette.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 27 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Raleigh, NC. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor can be made to the YMCA Robert Tomlinson Hill Memorial Endowment (https://give.ymcatriangle.org/fundraiser/6575596 ) or the Special Operations Warrior Foundation
