James Hester

James Robert Hester, 89, of Garner passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

He was born in Cumberland County, lived in Sampson County, and his family eventually moved to Harnett County near family. He is the son of the late Robert I. Hester and Madie Ray Hester.

He is survived by his wife Christine Hester, sons, Barry Hester of Raleigh and Darrin Hester (Debbie) of Garner; sister, Patricia Ann Page of Dunn, NC. Additionally, there are many cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Jane Lema.

James was a graduate of Erwin High School. He received an Associate degree in Police Science Technology from Wake Technical Community College. His career was in law enforcement. beginning with the Military Police in the US Army followed by the Raleigh Police Department where he retired.

Upon retirement, he and two fellow retired officers formed a landscaping business for approximately 15 years. They enjoyed the fellowship and hard work. He was always available to us at lending a hand with home and auto repairs. He also enjoyed wetting a hook occasionally on the sound of North Carolina waterways with an old buddy.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 9th at 12 PM in the VA Section of Montlawn Memorial Park. The family will be available to speak with friends after the service.
