Elizabeth Madge Buchanan Upham (Madge) was born on November 13, 1944, in Salford, England to Mary Elizabeth and Herbert Prince. She married Robert David Buchanan in 1963 in Manchester, England. Together, they lived in England and Canada, Kentucky, and ending up in North Carolina. While living in Kentucky, she finished her degree, and was employed by the University of Kentucky hospital assisting the residents. In 1989, Madge went out to help the victims of the Loma Prieta earthquake with the Red Cross. Following the death of Bob Buchanan in 2001, Madge married the Rev. Fr. John E. Upham in 2003 (later the Most Rev. John E. Upham). Madge was very active at St. George's Anglican Church, serving at various times on the Vestry of the Parish, on the Altar Guild, and in the Anglican Church Women (ACW). Madge was also active in the ACW for Diocese of the Atlantic States. She went to her eternal rest on August 22, 2025, while at Life Transitions in Raleigh.
She was predeceased by both of her beloved husbands Bob and John, her parents (Mary Elizabeth and Herbert Prince), her sister Dorothy Edwards, and her brothers Bob Prince and Tom Prince. She is survived by her son, David Buchanan (wife Cheryl, children Regan and Robert), her daughter, Jill Kummer (husband Chris, children Harrison and Jay), as well as her daughter, Audrey Dixon (husband John, children Christopher and Caroline), her stepson, Allan Upham (wife Rebekah Hansen, children Azalea and Isaiah), and stepdaughter, Tyson Upham.
Her funeral will be Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 10:30 AM, at St. George's Anglican Church, 1210 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. George's Anglican Church.
