Dwight "LeVerne" Stanley

RALEIGH - LeVerne Stanley, 77, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Southport on December 18, 1947, the son of the late George Clarence and Etta Mae Jones Stanley.

After excelling in high school athletics, he attended UNC Pembroke on a track and field scholarship. Following college, he served as the Athletic Director and head football coach at South Brunswick High School for 12 years.

In 1986, he opened Captain Stanley's Seafood in Raleigh, NC. LeVerne was a dedicated member of the community, supporting numerous organizations and local schools. He was an active member of the Wolfpack Club for over 30 years, and a longtime member of the Shriners and Masons.

His athletic interests continued throughout his life. He could often be found playing a round of golf or attending an NC State game. He also spent time vacationing in his native Brunswick County, where he enjoyed boating, fishing and hosting cookouts. His greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends.

LeVerne is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Paula Stanley; daughter, Ashley Brown (Michael); son, Heath Stanley (Laura); grandchildren, Preston Brown, Blair Brown, Mac Stanley, and Houston Stanley; brothers, Michael Stanley (Eva) and Donald Stanley (Gayle); sister-in-law, Toni Brisson; and niece, Jennifer Phillips (Jorge Abad).

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 1200 Benson Road, Garner, NC 27529. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home from 12:00 to 1:30 PM prior to the service. The burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC 27612.
