Donald Ray Hicks, known as Don to his family and friends, passed away peacefully at his home on March 22, 2026, at the age of 93. He was born on June 14, 1932, to the late Hallie and Irene Hicks. He was a native of Johnston County and returned to that area 52 years ago to make Willow Spring his family’s home.
Don’s career spanned nearly 40 years as a dedicated claim adjuster in the insurance business. He served as manager of the Raleigh office of State Auto for many years before retiring at 62.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 72 years, Shirley (Griffin) Hicks. He was a proud dad to his children Donna Hicks Falkner and her husband Mark, Denise Hicks, and Kenny Hicks and his wife Kathy. He was blessed to spend many years with his grandchildren, Daniel Garver and his significant other Marissa Atkins, Landis Falkner, and Trent Falkner and his significant other Liz Hull.
He was quite the social guy and never met a stranger. His generosity knew no bounds – he would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. He and Shirley loved to travel and were able to travel to all 50 states and many countries around the world. They remained friends with many they met during their travels.
Don had a deep love for the outdoors and spent many years tending to his vegetable garden. He took great pride in his work and especially enjoyed time on his John Deere tractor. Having grown up on a farm, you could say farming was simply in his blood.
He also loved NASCAR racing. He attended many races in his younger days and spent many weekends at home watching races on television in his later years. He loved cars and driving fast - though thankfully, he left the fast driving to the professionals.
He put his faith in the Lord as a young boy. In his later years he walked closely with the Lord and was ready to meet his Lord and Savior.
There will be a celebration of life at Fellowship Baptist Church, 1701 Bud Lipscomb Road. Visitation will be at 1:00pm followed by his funeral service at 2:00pm on Thursday, March 25, 2026. Burial will take place following the funeral service.
In addition to his parents, preceding him in death were his brother, Thomas, and sisters, Athalee and Edna.
In his memory, donations may be made to his church, Fellowship Baptist Church or St. Jude Children Hospital.
