Derek Alan "Rick" Cotter passed away on March 19, 2025, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Born on August 9, 1955, in Clarkson, New York, Rick lived a life defined by love for his family, dedication to his profession, a deep passion for automobiles, and a generous spirit of service. He was also an avid cyclist while physically able.
Rick spent his formative years in the Asheville area after his father relocated the family south for work with the Gerber Products Company. He graduated from T.C. Roberson High School before pursuing higher education with determination and focus. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. It was during his time at N.C. State that he met future wife, Beverly, through their mutual friend Vince. The two married shortly after Beverly completed her own studies at the university, beginning a partnership that would span almost 47 years.
Rick later advanced his education by earning a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, further strengthening the foundation for a distinguished career in engineering and technology.
In 1978, Rick began his professional journey with Ford Motor Company-a dream job that launched his career in the automotive industry. His path led him through several respected organizations including Michelin, Freightliner Trucks, Valmet, and Homelite Outdoor Products. At Freightliner, Rick's aptitude for computer-aided design (CAD) quickly became evident, earning him the reputation of being their resident "computer guru," and while at Valmet, he served as a computer systems administrator. Throughout his career, he skillfully alternated between design engineering and computer administration roles until health challenges brought his professional work to a close.
Rick's love for cars extended far beyond his career. He found joy in working on vehicles and generously shared this passion with others through volunteer work. He dedicated time to Wheels 4 Hope, an organization committed to providing reliable transportation to individuals in need. He also created lasting, precious memories with his son while volunteering at the North Carolina Transportation Museum-experiences that deepened their bond and their shared appreciation for automotive history and all things mechanical.
Rick is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Beverly Cotter; his son, Brett Cotter; and his daughter-in-law, Meagan Cotter (Hill). He also leaves behind his best friend from high school who has been a constant source of support, Eugene Fort, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved companions, Rusty the dog, and Lily the cat. He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian E. Cotter and Rita E. Marshall Cotter; his brother, Douglas A. Cotter; and his sister, Dianne Cotter Blankenship.
Rick's legacy endures through the lives he touched-whether through his contributions to engineering, his volunteer efforts within the community, or the treasured memories held by those closest to him. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to either Wheels 4 Hope, 411 East Durham Road, Cary, NC 27511, or the NC Transportation Museum by contacting Betsy Mowery at 704-550-3715 or emailing betsy.mowery@nctransportationmuseum.org.
