Brookie Wiggins Stephenson, 91, passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2025. Born in Johnston County, she was the daughter of the late Delma Wiggins and Ila Barbour Wiggins. Brookie was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was an excellent cook and could always be counted on for a big pot of chicken pastry and pecan pies. Over the years, she perfected her chocolate fudge recipe which became her signature treat. She worked for many years at International Paper where she retired from her position of Quality Control Lead in 1999. After her retirement, she and her husband Lynn enjoyed traveling and were blessed to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary. She was active in her church, Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church, as a deaconess and together with her husband, Lynn, visited loved ones and friends in the hospital and countless shut-ins. She walked around the sanctuary each Sunday to personally welcome any visitors. She was a selfless person that always put the needs of others first and she loved her family wholeheartedly, especially her children and grandchildren. Brookie was not fond of her name, but that soon changed after her grandchildren started calling her Grandma Brookie, the sweetest sound she had ever heard.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 15th at Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church; Pastor Luke Copeland will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Fellowship Community Cemetery, Angier. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church from 10:00-10:45 am. Brookie is survived by her daughter, Beverly Peters (Bill); daughter-in-law, Kim Stephenson; grandchildren, April Baier (Tim), Zackary Stephenson (Carolina), Brandi Baker (Joe), Matthew Stephenson (Alex); great-grandchildren, Autumn, Lucas, Brady, Sammy, and Dorothy; and several loving nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and siblings, Brookie was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years and the love of her life, Lynn Stephenson, her son, Terry Stephenson, her three siblings and their spouses, and the three siblings and spouses of her husband's family. They all loved her dearly. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family would like to extend their deep appreciation and gratitude towards the staff at Clayton Rehab and Healthcare Center and those who visited her there. The dedication and care they showed Brookie is truly appreciated. She was blessed with the best roommate, Ms. Judy, who we will never forget.
