Betty Jean King

Betty Busbee King, age 89, passed away early Tuesday morning of June 2, 2026, with her son and daughter by her side. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, June 5 at 1PM, with family visitation beginning at 12 noon. Services will be held at Bryan-Lee Funeral Homes at 1200 Benson Road, Garner NC 27529. The graveside service will follow the memorial service at Raleigh Memorial Park at 7501 Glenwood Avenue.

Betty was born in Sims, NC on July 27, 1936 to Herman Welton Busbee and Beulah Mae Busbee (Macon). She attended Hugh Morson High School in Raleigh, and afterwards worked at Sir Walter Hotel in downtown Raleigh, where in 1956 she met her future husband Weldon Harold King. They married in 1958, and together raised three children, Ronnie, Reggie and Yvonne. After her husband's passing in 1989, Betty returned to the work force, continuing until her retirement in 2001. She has lived for the past 10 years at Poyner Springs retirement community in Raleigh, NC where she was surrounded by a loving community of fellow residents.

Betty was known for her love for people, and those who knew her understood that she never met a stranger! If you came to her home, she was going to make sure you were well fed. She always loved little children, even other residents' grandchildren would come and visit Miss Betty often at Poyner Springs. A woman of God, she would make sure to share her faith and love for her savior Jesus Christ to all. She was well known for her hugs (or more accurately bear hugs), you would know that you had been hugged for sure! She loved her children deeply and fervently, a true Mama Bear. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her and loved her so much.

She is survived by her son, Reginald Harold King (wife Teresa); her daughter, Yvonne King Hughes (husband Craig); stepson, Weldon Ronald King (wife Renee); grandchildren, Megan King Griffin (husband Chris), Lauren King Gobble (husband Brandon), Ronald Christopher King (wife Julie), and David King; nephew, Trey Baker; and her sister, Geraldine Busbee Morris.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made in her name to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.
