Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her step-father Thorton Hart, an infant sister, step-brothers Ray and Philip Hart, and sister-in-law Vicki Stephens who was married to Barbara's brother Dewey. Her brother Danny Martin Stephens passed away just after Barbara.

Barbara grew up as a farm girl planting and working in tobacco on Mr. Hart's farm near Angier in. She enjoyed riding her horse Duke in the Mule Day Parade. After high school she enrolled in a business course at Campbell College in 1963. It was there that she met husband Max. In 1964 Barbara went to work in the Revenue Department for the State of North Carolina in Raleigh, NC. After thirty-six years of dedicated service to the State, she retired and received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Michael Easley.
The family is very grateful for the care and concern provided by the Emergency Medical Services of Angier and the staff at Rex Hollie Springs.
