Asuncion Olga Catacora de Zaga or "Olguita" as she was known to family and friends, passed away peacefully in her own bed at home on the night of December 27th, 2025. She was surrounded by family at her side. She was 96 years old.
Olga was born on August 15th, 1929, in Puno Peru to the late Gabriela and Encarnicion Catacora. She grew up in Puno and spent most of her adult life in Lima, Peru. She retired in the United States and became a citizen in the 90s to be near her children who had moved to the United States, living in Virginia and North Carolina during what she would later refer to as the best years of her life.
Olga grew up on her family's ranch with her parents and six siblings. She attended Santa Rosa de Lima, a private Catholic school, where she was at the top of her class. She became one of the few women of her time to graduate from college with a bachelor's degree in teaching.
She later met Victor Zaga, her late husband. They moved to Lima to raise their five children. In Lima, Olga worked as an elementary and later middle school teacher. Her favorite subjects to teach were Peruvian history and the alphabet to young children. She worked as an educator for more than 40 years.
Olga believed in putting family first, pursuing higher education, practicing her faith unwaveringly, and having a strong sense of community. These are the values she modeled and instilled in her children and grandchildren.
Olga had a great sense of style and enjoyed shopping with friends, going to church, having big family dinners, playing cards, and traveling. She was blessed with excellent health, a large family, and a kind heart. She made everyone feel at home and comfortable in her presence and always had wisdom, jokes, and love to share. There was never a day that went by that she didn't do something for someone else or pray for her family.
Olga is predeceased by her sisters Rosa, Isabel, and Cristina; her brother Mauro; and her son-in-law Edward Frisbie. She is survived by her sisters Loren and Antonieta and brother Santos.
Olga is survived by her children Nancy, Guido, Lucy, Raul, and Grecy. Additionally, she is survived by her grandchildren Elena, Joao, Trevor, Randy, Victor and her great grandson Henry. Olga was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, who truly had a life well lived. Her family and friends will always carry her in their hearts and think about her every single day until they meet again. A private service will be held to celebrate her life.
