Anne Latham Johnson

October 4, 1931 — February 16, 2026

Anne Latham Johnson of 1500 Sawmill Rd (Springmoor), Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away on February 16, 2026, at 94 years old. She was a loving and generous wife, mother, and grandmother, and a good friend to those who knew her in the community.

Anne was born in Leaksville, North Carolina, to Horace E. and Lyda S. Latham. She attended Leaksville High School and Montreat High School and graduated from Wallace/Rose Hill High School after her family moved to Rose Hill during her senior year. Following high school, Anne attended Flora McDonald College and the Women's College of Greensboro (now UNCG). Her college trajectory was interrupted in 1952 when she married a young law student named Samuel H. Johnson.

During her first year of marriage, Anne worked as a secretary in the School of Commerce at UNC Chapel Hill, while her husband Sam finished his last year of law school. After law school, Sam and Anne settled in Raleigh, where Anne became a secretary for the Department of Commerce. Upon the arrival of the first of their two children, Anne left her outside employment and became a full-time homemaker, caring for the children and supporting Sam in his growing political ambitions.

Anne was active in civic and church activities, becoming a member of the Raleigh Junior Woman's Club during the early years of her marriage. An accomplished pianist and vocalist, Anne was active in the choir of West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. As the children grew up and left home, she became even more active in community and church affairs, becoming active with the Friendship Force, serving as a poll judge at her local voting precinct and as a member of the Tryon Palace Commission. She was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer for many years. She continued to actively serve her church family as a Stephen Minister, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and as a Ruling Elder of her church.

Anne enjoyed reading, bridge, supper club, book club, the symphony and trips to the North Carolina coast as well as other domestic and foreign destinations. She had an outgoing and vivacious personality and enjoyed the company of her family and friends who will miss her deeply.

Anne is survived by her daughter, Leslie Carpenter, and her husband Tyler Carpenter, their son, Blake Carpenter and his wife Elizabeth, and her son Bill Johnson, his wife Karen, their children, Emily and Jake Johnson, and Jake's wife Kate and their daughter Hadley. Anne was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel H. Johnson, her sister Jane F. Latham, and her brother Robert Q. Latham.
