Alice Douglas Powell (lovingly called Granny by everyone) 96, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, on June 1, 2026.
Born to Braxton and Lucille Douglas, Alice was raised as the daughter of sharecroppers and learned from an early age the value of hard work, perseverance, love, and faith. Those qualities remained with her throughout her life and became part of the legacy she leaves behind.
Alice was married to Bobby Powell for 55 years until his passing. She was also preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Linda Sue Powell, who was never far from her thoughts and forever close to her heart. In addition, she was preceded in death by her siblings, J.C., Eunice, Ed, Jerry, and Richard.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Powell Storms and husband, Gerald; son-in-law, Dwight Driver; grandchildren Donald Grady, Brian Grady and wife Pam, Erin Beck and husband David, and Emily Coe and husband Doug; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Spencer, Brandon, Aidan, Charleigh, Ruthie, Grayson, Makayla, Haley, Brooklyn, and Anthony; and one great-great-grandson on the way.
Alice's family extended far beyond blood relations. She lovingly welcomed Ricky and Wanda Cooper into her family, along with their son, Richard and wife Ashton, and their son Benton; and their daughter, Jordan and husband Tyler, along with their children, Bodhi and Carsyn, and a baby girl on the way. She had a special gift for opening her heart and home to others, and many who came into her life became family.
A graduate of Garner High School, Alice spent much of her life farming and was never afraid of hard work. She also worked in the cafeteria at Mount Auburn School and later cared for children in her home. The children she kept, and their families became an extension of her own family, a testament to the love and compassion she freely shared with everyone around her.
To know Granny was to love her. She possessed a gentle spirit, a servant's heart, and a sense of humor that brought joy to those around her. She rarely complained, always appreciated a good meal, hummingbirds, and found happiness in life's simple blessings. Most importantly, she loved Jesus Christ and lived out her faith through kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for others.
Alice leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, hard work, and laughter that will continue through the many lives she has touched. While her family grieves from her absence, they rejoice in knowing that she is now reunited with her husband, daughter, parents, and the many loved ones who have gone before her in the presence of her Savior.
Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love a gift that will be cherished forever.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gentiva Hospice in Clayton, North Carolina, whose compassionate care and support meant so much to Granny and her family.
