Vernell H. Mama Nell Jones, 81, passed away peacefully Sunday January 8, 2012 surrounded by her family. Mama Nell was born in Pender Co. August 19, 1930. She was the oldest of five children born to Crowell H. and Lila W. Hall. She married Raymond E. Jones in 1949. They made their home in Raleigh where they raised their two children, Marji and Eddie. Vernell retired from N.C Attorneys General Office in 1990. She and Raymond enjoyed many years of fishing, card playing and travelling together until his death in 2003. Vernell loved her grandchildren and bragged on them to the point of embarrassment. She knew no strangers and readily shared her cooking, knitting crafts and opinion. Vernell was a charter member of North Raleigh United Methodist Church where she served as an active member of the J O Y Group and championed the delivery of audio sermons to the shut-ins. She loved her church community, contributing to the needs of others and being in charge. Vernell is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Madline H. Griffin and survived by her daughter, Marji Harward, and son-in-law, Stanley Harward, of Knightdale, her son, Eddie Jones, and daughter-in-law Bennie Jones, of Raleigh, Grandchildren Kylie Graves, Jeremy Graves, Stacy Fleming (Ryan), Win Jones, Mason Jones, and Jordan Harward. Sisters Julia Wells ( Johnny) Willard, Hattie Teachey ( Larry) Wilmington, brother Needham Hall ( Sylvia) Watha, special Aunt, Daisie Craft of Raleigh, two additional Aunts and many cousins, nieces and nephews A private entombment will take place at Brier Creek Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Saturday January 14, 2012 North Raleigh United Methodist Church 8501 Honeycutt Road Raleigh, with visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Bayleaf Volunteer Fire Department 11713 Six Forks Rd. Raleigh.
