WENDELL – Thomas Wayne Best, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 10th surrounded by his loving family. Wayne was born in Sampson County, NC, to the late Emmitt L. and Ollie Jordan Best. Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Jewel E. Best; daughters, Kelly Best of Wilson, Karen Kelly and husband, Craig of Garner; and son, Keith Best of Garner. He is also survived by his sister, Debbie Faircloth (Will) of Garner; and brother, Mickey Best (Sue) of Garner as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Best and Jerry Best; sister, Shirley Massey. After graduating from Garner High School, Wayne joined the Marine Reserves. Later, he joined the Raleigh Fire Department where after 33 years he retired as Captain. During this time he also worked for 37 years at Brinks Armored Car Incorporated on days away from the station. Wayne enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, laughing and telling stories of good times. His favorite get away spot was at Camp Ocean Forest in Emerald Isle, where he was better known as “Bob”. He loved attending southern gospel music concerts with Jewel and made many dear friends at various venues. Wayne and Jewel enjoyed being long time season ticket holders of the Carolina Hurricanes. Wayne also loved his four-legged grandpups and was often caught giving them secret treats. Wayne was loved by many and touched so many lives. He was a true hero that now has wings. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Joseph Neighbors and his staff for their devoted care. They would also like to thank the Rescue Squad Personnel of Cleveland, Clayton and 50/210 EMS/Fire Depts. for their care of Wayne. Funeral services will be held on Saturday in the chapel of Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner at 11:00 am. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Clayton. The family will receive family and friends from 6-8 pm on Friday at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner and other times at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Craig Kelly.
