Eugene Robert Ashburn

May 26, 1920 — March 30, 1961

Raleigh- In the early morning hours of April 14, 2014, Eugene Robert Ashburn stepped out of the darkness and into the light of heaven. He was met there by his beloved wife, Frankie. They are now in each others loving arms for eternity. Gene was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina on May 26, 1920, the son of Robert Lee and Emma Wilson Ashburn. He married the love of his life, Frances Wilcox Ashburn on March 30, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2003. He was also preceded by his daughter, Ann Ashburn Ingram and his grandson, Clay Randolph Phillips, III. He was the last of his parents children to pass, being preceded by sisters, Rogene and Rugene Ashburn that died as infants, Loraine Lee, and Eileen Zimmerman. He was also preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Lugene Ashburn. He leaves to remember him, his daughters and son-in-laws, Sherri and Randy Phillips of Raleigh, Sharon and Thomas Ratcliffe of Elkin, NC and Jeanie and Jim Doty of Rockwell, NC. He is survived by 9 grandchildren including special grandsons, Brent, Ben and Josh Phillips, David Robertson and Stephen Ratcliffe. The great-grandchildren include two very special little girls, Tressie Grace Robertson and Georgia Bailey Phillips. Gene served in the United States Army and was a disabled veteran. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC, and faithfully attended Saint Andrews United Methodist Church in Raleigh, NC for the last ten years. Funeral Services will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 16th at Saint Andrews United Methodist Church led by Reverend Wayne Hicks. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00-1:00 pm prior to the service. A graveside commitment service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, April 17th at Bethel United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem with the Reverend Gary Elrod officiating. The family is truly appreciative of Genes dear friends, Vince and Kathy Revels; Paul and Corothy Sims; Paul and Jean Holbrook; Mr. Bobby Barbour and Ken and Judy Sutton. A special thank you to the Pathfinders Sunday School class for all the wonderful times shared with Gene. The family also extends their gratitude to the staff of Unihealth Nursing Home of Raleigh for the wonderful care they provided Gene in the last months of his life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Andrews United Methodist Church, 1201 Maxwell Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603.
