Doris Thompson Wall peacefully passed away at Sunrise of Raleigh on Thursday, December 18, 2020. A lifelong Raleigh native, she was the daughter of the late John Marvin Thompson and Lilly Ball Thompson. The youngest of 5 children, Doris had many fond memories of growing up at 400 Kinsey Street in her beloved Boylan Heights neighborhood. She attended Louisburg College and graduated from Peace College. In 1947, she married William Mitchell (Bill) Wall (deceased) and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on September 20, 2017 with many friends and family. A charter member of Trinity Methodist Church, she enjoyed teaching children’s Sunday school for many years. Doris worked at the NC Dept. of Insurance before her career as secretary of the business department at Meredith College before retiring in 1987. She created many long-lasting friendships at Meredith during her 18 years there including her nephew’s future wife who was a student at the time, Angie Thompson. Doris and Bill were very active in the community especially with the Raleigh Exchange Club where they enjoyed selling peanuts and meeting folks at the NC State Fair for many years. Doris always looked forward to hosting picnics at the Oxford Orphanage each year. Doris had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh which would cause others to join her especially after hearing one of Uncle Bill’s jokes. Doris had the ability to share joy with others and always made strangers feel like friends in quick time with the twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. Although she never had children of her own, she treated her nieces and nephews as her own children. She especially loved Christmas and received great joy giving gifts to so many of her friends and family every year. Most important to Doris was following her Christian faith and being a loving wife to her husband Bill. We especially want to thank her caregivers, members of her Sunday school class at Bay Leaf Baptist Church, and her neighbors for their continued support during her illness. She is survived by her nieces Suzanne Carmel Southard (Art), Glenda Thacher (Eddie) and nephews John Thompson (Vicki), Dickie Thompson (Angie), Marty Thompson (Cindy), Scott Thompson, Sam Perry, Michael Perry, and many “grandchildren and great-grandchildren.” A graveside service will be held Monday, December 28th at 11:00 AM at the Bay Leaf Baptist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Bay Leaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bayleaf Church Road, Raleigh, NC 27614.
