RALEIGH – Valerie Wix Moore, 55, a native of Marietta, Georgia and 32-year resident of Cullowhee and Sylva, North Carolina, passed away at her home in Raleigh surrounded by her family.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22 at Vintage Church Downtown, 118 S Person St, Raleigh, NC 27601. Pastor Jordan Penley will officiate. The service will be streamed live; go to vintagenc.com/downtown/ and click on “YouTube Channel” in the Welcome message.
Valerie was born in Fulton County, Georgia on September 20, 1965 to Albert and Geneva Wix, both of whom preceded her in death.
Valerie is survived by her husband of 37 years, Reuben Moore; daughters, Crystal Hakansson of Clayton, Cristen Moore of Raleigh; sons, Carl Moore and wife, Mindy of Smiths Station, Alabama, Chuck Moore of Dunn; brothers, Michael Wix and wife, Tina of Dallas, Georgia, Jeff Wix and wife, Diana of Dallas, Georgia, Chris Wix and wife, Jenna of Acworth, Georgia; and by her grandchildren, Konrad, Erika, Landon, and Grayson.
Valerie was a graduate of McEachern High School in Marietta, Georgia, and attended North Georgia Vocational and Technical School where she studied cosmetology. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Ministry Education from Vision International University. Residing in Marietta after marriage, she moved with her husband and first daughter to Raleigh in 1984 before the family relocated to Cullowhee in 1985. The children were raised at the family home in Cullowhee until the remaining family moved to Zed Hill in Sylva in 2011. In 2017 after the children were all grown Valerie and her husband moved to Raleigh where he became employed with the City of Raleigh.
Besides bearing primary responsibility for raising her children, Valerie often worked outside the home in several fields including Early Childhood Education with Cullowhee Kids and as a Parent Advocate for the attainment of child mental health services with OneVoice. After developing home school curriculums and homeschooling the two youngest children, Valerie was one of the inaugural teachers for Heritage Christian Academy in Sylva.
Valerie and her husband were long-time active members of the First Baptist Church of Sylva, NC, and of Lifeway Community Church also of Sylva, both places where dear life-long friendships were held. At the time of passing she was a member of Vintage Church Downtown and their Skyhouse Community Group where many new friendships were made.
Valerie had a heart for helping people find a relationship with Jesus Christ. She was an active mentor to the women at Life Challenge of Western North Carolina, a Girls-in-Action teacher, youth group leader and trip chaperone, and a missionary to the nations of Ghana and Nicaragua. She led Lifegroups with her husband on Financial Peace, Fireproofing your Marriage, and others.
Valerie was by no means perfect, but as a Christian she was being perfected, as all who profess Christ are. She has now achieved perfection and will be sorely missed in this life by all who loved her.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made in Valerie’s memory to Life Challenge of Western North Carolina by visiting www.lifechallengewnc.org/donate/.

Praying for you all. Val was a wonderful lady. She was more of a big sister than a cousin growing up. We know she is far better off than we are but we will miss her. We love you all.

We had lost touch with Valerie and are deeply saddened to hear of her passing. Valerie was a vibrant, loving and caring woman–we feel blessed to have know her. Ed appreciated the time and travel he experienced with ONE VOICE, Valerie and the “gang”. Her loyalty and conviction to childhood mental health well-being was evident in her leadership with effectiveness and determination. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Moore family.
