Claude Curtis Cardwell

June 19, 1925 ~ August 10, 2019

Claude Curtis Cardwell, age 94, of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully at Transitions Hospice in Raleigh, NC on August 10, 2019.

He was the son of the late Carol Spencer Cardwell and Roselyn Curtis Cardwell of Hampton, Virginia born on June 19, 1925.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Nell Carmines Cardwell and his brothers, Charles Robert Cardwell and William Custis Cardwell.

Claude graduated from Morrison High School in Newport News, Virginia in 1942. He then served in the US Navy as a Metalsmith in the Pacific stationed in the Hawaiian Islands.

Upon his return to civilian life he attended the Apprentice School at Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company before attending North Carolina State College, graduating in the class of 1954 with a Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering. He worked for various companies throughout the years, including the Department of Energy. His work took him to many regions around the world. He was instrumental in the development and installation of the first nuclear power plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He had a great love for Formula C racing cars. As a race car owner and driver, he competed along the east coast circuit where he won many trophies. He also enjoyed the many pleasures associated with yachting along the eastern coast.

Because of his love of boating he worked for Disney World in Florida as a ferry boat Captain for ten years after his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion and Past Master of Transportation Masonic Lodge No. 337 in Newport News, Virginia.

Upon his departure from Disney, he relocated to Raleigh, NC where he found love again with Ann Bason. They were married in June of 2018. She was his constant, devoted and caring support in his declining health.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Bason Cardwell, brother Carol Spencer Cardwell, Jr. (Helen), seven nieces and nephews, and 37 great nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home on Saturday, August 24. 2019 at 11:00 AM.

Memorial Donations may be made to Transitions Hospice of Wake County or charity of choice.
