Thursday, April 15, 2010

Donald Hadley Pickett, 54, died peacefully on Wednesday, Feb 24th of complications following surgery. His devoted wife, Helen Lee Tart, was by his side. Don was born in Raleigh on October 15, 1955, the son of the late Sarah and Floyd Pickett. He was employed over the course of four decades in technical theatre, including as a technical director, lighting designer, and master electrician. He was admired for his intelligence, professionalism, and dedication to his craft. Most recently, he worked in Meymandi Concert Hall, Fletcher Opera Theater, and Kennedy Theatre. Don found great enjoyment in the company of dogs (and sometimes cats). In 2005, Helen and Don organized the Friends of the Off Leash Dog Park at Oakwood Park, where they spent many happy hours with their beloved Ernie who passed away last year, and continued to volunteer maintaining the dog park. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the Open Door Clinic of Urban Ministries of Wake County and the Cardiothoracic Unit at Duke University Hospital. Also surviving: brother, Dan Pickett (Terry) of Raleigh. There will be a private gathering to celebrate Don’s life at a later date. No flowers.
