| Willow Spring- Robert Edward Coleman, beloved father and devoted grandfather, departed this life too soon on Saturday, February 6, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. He was 73. Robert was born July, 3, 1936 in Newburgh, NY to Estelle R. and William K. Coleman. He lived in New Jersey for 40 years before moving to Apex, NC in February 2009 to be near his grandson.
Robert retired with 35 years of service as a letter carrier with the Vineland Post Office in Vineland, New Jersey and ten years of service as a security guard with Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. He was a Radar Repairman for the US Army National Guard from 1953 to 1964, and was honorably discharged as a corporal.
His greatest joys in life were meeting people, watching and talking football, fishing, traveling, visiting casinos, and playing with his grandson. To know him was to love him. He was humble, funny, and full of kindness.
Survivors include five children: sons Christian and Patrick Coleman, both of New Jersey; daughter Mary F. Coleman of Idaho; daughter Janice Leagra and her husband Charles, of North Carolina; and son Shawn Coleman and his wife, Denise of New Jersey. He leaves behind one adoring grandson, Spencer Leagra, of North Carolina. Also surviving are two brothers, William and James Coleman of New York; two sisters, Rita Hyatt of Ohio; Betty Cain of New York; half-sister, Cynthia Wolfe of Delaware; two half-brothers, Leland and Wayne Coleman, both of Delaware; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Ruscitti of New York; Dorothy Driggers of Georgia; Patricia Gardner of Florida; Estelle Swain of New York; and one half-brother, Eugene Coleman of Delaware.
A private memorial service with military rites was held in Robert’s honor at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home in Garner, North Carolina on Wednesday, February 10. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Robert’s memory to the American Vascular Association at 800-258-7188, the American Lung Association at 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. NW Ste. 800 Washington, DC 20004 or the American Diabetes Association.
