Long time Raleigh-Cary resident, Helene Payet Armstrong, passed away on February 19, 2010. Originally from Paterson, New Jersey, she graduated in 1940 from the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (Parsons) in New York City in Costume Design and Illustration. Several of her final women’s clothing designs were bought and used by some of the famous clothiers like Saks 5th Avenue. She worked as a secretary in an aircraft assembly plant during World War II. She later moved to Raleigh, NC in 1952 with her mother Blanche Payet and brother, George. Because she was multi-lingual, she was employed by the NC State College of Textiles as the college interpreter and liaison with foreign dignitaries. Helene also acted as the communiqué between the College and many of the industrial polymer and textile companies. Additionally, she was Research Assistant in feasibility testing of synthetic fibers. Throughout her associations with the college, she met and made many friends. While at the College, she met the late Arthur A. Armstrong, Jr., who was working on his doctorate. Helene and Arthur married in 1955.
Helene was an accomplished artist in painting, rendering, illustrations, and commercial art. She was also a superb pianist with an exceptional ear for music as was her brother, George. Helene will be missed as she has inspired many family members, friends, and companies to accomplish their goals in life.
Helene is survived by sons, Richard and Alex Armstrong ; brother, Bob Payet; and grandchildren, Michelle and David.
