| John A. Edwards, Sr., 82, of Raleigh died Monday morning, February 8, from complications of surgery. He was born July 2, 1927 in Snow Hill, NC. He was a graduate of Porter Military Academy in Charleston, S.C. and served in the US Naval Service following his graduation in 1945. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1947, John came to Raleigh to attend North Carolina State College, graduating with a bachelor degree in Civil Engineering in 1952. In 1957, he established John A. Edwards and Company, Consulting Engineers, and following his retirement in 1989, he stayed involved with the company until his death.
John enjoyed working with others in the community, serving on the Planning Commission from 1977 until 1979 and on the Raleigh City Council from 1980 to 1983. His many civic activities also included serving on boards such as the Raleigh Little Theatre and the Christian Fellowship Home. John was an avid fan and supporter of the Wolfpack and attended most football and basketball games. He leant a supporting hand to numerous people over the years and will be missed by many.
In the last 20 years of his life, he spent time in Morehead City, enjoying a series of boats. For a number of years, he and his wife Linda cruised the East Coast and the Bahamas in their boat, Jubilation. When John decided to retire from captaining boats, they traveled throughout the world, both on land and sea.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Ott McMurry Edwards; his son, Johnny Edwards; his daughter, Susan Edwards Spurlin and son-in-law, Bill Spurlin; and his step-daughter, Parie Hines and her husband, Agen Schmitz and their son, Sofian.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, 831 Wake Forest Rd. Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Rd. Raleigh. Burial will be private at Oakwood Cemetery.
