| GARNER – Essie Liles Perry, 106, passed away Tuesday. Born in Halifax County, she was the daughter of the late Edward Wilson Liles and Affie Glasgow Liles.
In 1967, after teaching for 40 years in seven different counties of North Carolina, Mrs. Perry retired and for the next 20 years, volunteered with the Garner schools and with Smart Start in Garner. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Garner, teaching a Sunday School Class and being involved with WMU. Community organizations that she was involved with include Garner Woman’s Club, Lions Club, Kings Daughters, Eastern Star, Clara Craven Book Club, Golden K and the Democratic Party.
In 1987, Essie Perry was the recipient of the Wake County Volunteer of the Year Award. In 1997, she was the recipient of the prestigious James Stevens Service to Garner Award. Her hobbies included reading, crocheting, cooking and travel. She traveled to Europe, the Holy Land, England, Scotland, Wales, South America and Canada, as well as 48 of the 50 States of the US.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Friday at First Baptist Church of Garner. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh.
Surviving are her daughters, Margaret Perry Marshall of Wake Forest and Carol Perry Marshall of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Elaine Annis, Cherry Ballard, June Hickman, Melody Shaver, Dawn McCraney, Mark Allen, Peggy McKenzie, Beth Atkins and Richard Marshall; eleven great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by her husband, Eustace R. Perry, a retired school principal and her son, Edward A. Perry.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00-8:00 PM at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
