Dewitt King

McCULLERS—Lonnie Dewitt King, 81, a retired rural mail carrier for 361/2 years, died Thursday at Rex Hospital. A native of Wake Co., he was the son of the late L.O. “Buddy” and Mary Wall King. He spent his entire life being devoted to his family, church, and community. He was a member of Plymouth Church for 70 years and served as Deacon, Church Treasurer, Choir Member and an Adult Sunday School Teacher. A 56 year member of the McCullers Ruritan Club, he served as Club President, District Lieutenant Governor, National District Director, and in this past December, he received the Ruritan for Life Award from his home club. Mr. Dewitt served as Scout Master for the McCullers Boy Scout Troop #343 for 21 years and received the Silver Beaver Award and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow. Mr. King was preceded in death by his wives, Essie Vinson King and Marie Sauls King. Memorial services will be 2:30 PM Sunday at Plymouth Church with Rev. Chris Partin officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church. Surviving: daughters, Linda Matthews of Garner and Marilyn King of Fuquay-Varina; grandson, Bradley Matthews of Garner and great-grandson, Tyler Matthews; sisters, Polly Umstead (J.D). of Garner and Edna Davenport (Roger) of Raleigh; brother, David King (Dixie) of Raleigh; stepchildren, Jennie Macleod and (Dr. Norman) of Colorado, Robert Sauls (Carey) of Florida, Donna Rosser (Steve) of Wilmington and Linda Spain ( David) of Raleigh; step grandchildren, Hudson Sauls, Christina Lloyd, Dalia Sauls and Patrick Spain, and devoted friend and care giver, Latoya Bullock: brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ford and Sue Jordan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Plymouth Church Building Fund, 6104 Rock Service Station Road, Raleigh, NC 27603.
